The Complete Guide to Champion Shuffleboard Tables
Ask a shuffleboard league player which tables they'd choose and Champion comes up fast. This is a manufacturer whose reputation was built in bars and tournament halls before it ever mattered in home game rooms, and the engineering reflects that lineage: a three-inch solid maple playfield, a polymer coating designed to outlast the building it sits in, and a scoring system invented to solve a problem that only shows up when you actually play a lot of shuffleboard. Twelve models span from $4,195 to $12,795 across our collection, in lengths from a 7-foot compact table to full 22-foot tournament boards. This guide explains what makes Champion different, which model suits which room, and how to think about the decision. Compare it against every brand in our complete shuffleboard table collection.
Wood In One Door, Tables Out the Other
Champion was founded in 1988 and has built every table since at its facility in Richland Hills, Texas. The company describes the operation plainly: unfinished lumber arrives at one end of the building and finished tables ship from the other. Cutting, forming, curing, sanding, staining, and finishing all happen under one roof, with no overseas kits and no outsourced playfields.
This is worth more than a flag sticker. Shuffleboard playfields are the part of a table most vulnerable to shortcuts — a beautifully built cabinet can hide a low-grade playing surface, and buyers rarely discover the difference until the table has been in use for a year. Champion's argument is that controlling the whole process, particularly the curing and adjustment of playfields, is what produces consistency. Thirty-plus years of building and playing shuffleboard has gone into refining those processes. Among the brands we stock, only Holland matches that depth of domestic manufacturing.
The Three-Inch Playfield
Playfield thickness is the clearest specification separating serious shuffleboard tables from recreational ones, and Champion sits at the top of our range.
Every full-size Champion model uses a 3"-thick by 20"-wide solid Canadian maple playfield. For context: entry-level tables in our light-up collection run closer to 14" wide and a fraction of that thickness. Brunswick, our other premium maple brand, tops out at 2.5". Champion's extra half-inch is not a marketing number — mass is what resists the slow warping and denting that eventually ruins a wood playfield, and a three-inch maple bed has a great deal more of it.
The 20" width changes how the game plays. Narrow playfields reward straight, accurate throws and little else. Twenty inches opens up the strategic layer of shuffleboard: deliberate bank shots, knockouts, hangers placed tight against the edge, defensive blocking. It's a more interesting game on a wider surface.
One practical detail worth knowing: Champion playfields always measure 16 inches shorter than the overall table length. A 12-foot table has a playfield just under 11 feet. Factor that in when comparing lengths across brands.
Lifetime Polymer: What It Actually Solves
Traditional shuffleboard playfields wear. The finish thins under puck impact and wax abrasion, play gets inconsistent, and eventually the table needs professional resurfacing — a real cost, and weeks without a table.
Champion's answer is a quarter-inch-thick clear polymer coating poured over the maple. It's thick enough that it never requires resurfacing over the life of the table, and it holds consistent speed and smoothness rather than degrading gradually. Champion backs the playfield with a lifetime warranty; the cradle carries one year.
This is the feature most worth understanding before you compare Champion against a cheaper table. The purchase price gap between a Champion and a mid-range board narrows considerably once you account for resurfacing costs that never arrive. It's also why Champion tables hold up in commercial settings where a home-grade table would be destroyed within a few seasons.
Waxing is still required — wax is what creates glide and it gets consumed with play. Champion's Sun-Glo line is formulated for these playfields, and silicone spray and wax ship with every table.
Handicap Scoring: The Feature Nobody Asks About and Everybody Uses
Here's a problem every shuffleboard owner eventually hits. You buy a table, you play a lot, you get good. Your spouse, your kids, your guests do not. Within a few months you're winning every game by a wide margin, nobody wants to play you anymore, and a very expensive table goes quiet.
Champion patented Handicap Scoring to fix exactly this. The system adjusts scoring so players of different abilities can compete on genuinely even footing — the beginner has a real path to winning, the experienced player still has to play well. It comes standard across the lineup, with traditional and electronic scoring units available as alternatives.
For a home game room, this may be the most consequential feature on the table. A shuffleboard that stays competitive across a mixed-ability household gets used for decades. One that doesn't becomes furniture.
The Champion Lineup
Entry and compact
The Gentry (from $4,195) is the accessible way into the brand, pairing Champion's playfield construction with a simpler cabinet. The Bank Shot 7ft ($5,595) is the outlier in the lineup — at seven feet it's Champion's most space-efficient table and a rare option for anyone who wants this build quality in a genuinely small room.
The tournament classics
The Grand Champion (from $7,895) is the model most associated with the brand — straightforward, heavily built, designed around play rather than decor. The Grand Champion Limited Edition (from $8,395) adds upgraded detailing to the same platform.
Contemporary and design-led
The Sheffield (from $7,995) takes an industrial-modern direction with clean lines and solid maple framing — the pick for a contemporary basement or finished loft. The Arch (from $10,795) is built around a distinctive arched base that makes it a visual centerpiece.
Traditional and furniture-grade
The Worthington (from $8,395) carries an Italian-inspired Gothic cabinet with two-toned detailed legs. The Capri (from $9,395) and Venetian (from $9,995) move into refined furniture-grade cabinetry for formal game rooms and residential lounges.
Rustic and statement pieces
The Rustic (from $10,795) uses weathered, distressed oak with cast iron accents and braced crossbeam construction — individually stained, so no two are identical. Ideal for cabins, lodges, and rooms built around reclaimed materials. At the top, the Reagan (from $11,395) and Charleston (from $11,595) are full statement pieces, built for spaces where the table anchors the room.
Choosing a Length
Champion offers the broadest size range of any brand we carry — most models in 9', 12', 14', 16', 18', 20', and 22'. This is a real advantage, because it means you're choosing a cabinet style and a length independently rather than accepting whatever length a given model happens to come in.
How length changes the game:
- 7ft to 9ft — accessible, fast games, forgiving. Suits family rooms and tight basements. Shop 9ft tables.
- 12ft to 14ft — the sweet spot for most serious home rooms. Long enough to reward touch and strategy, short enough to fit a normal finished basement. Shop 12ft and 14ft.
- 16ft to 18ft — approaching competition dimensions. Demands genuine skill and a dedicated room. Shop 16ft and 18ft.
- 20ft to 22ft — full tournament and commercial length. The most authentic game available. Shop 22ft tables.
The honest advice: buy the longest table your room can accommodate with proper clearance. Players almost never regret length; they frequently regret buying short.
Room Requirements, Weight, and Delivery
Clearance. Add 6 to 8 feet to the table length — 3 to 4 feet at each end so players can step back and follow through. A 12ft Champion needs roughly 18 to 20 feet of room; a 22ft table needs 28 to 30 feet. Cabinets run 31" wide without a scoring unit or 36" with one, so allow 7 to 8 feet of width.
Weight. Roughly 50 lbs per foot. That's about 450 lbs installed for a 9ft table and over 1,100 lbs for a 22ft board. These are the heaviest tables on our site by a clear margin.
What that means practically. Measure your delivery path before you order — doorways, stair turns, landing dimensions, basement access. A 22ft crated table is a logistics exercise, not a delivery. If you're installing above ground level, give the floor loading some thought; a thousand pounds concentrated across a few legs is a meaningful point load. And plan on professional installation: the playfield must be set precisely level, and a poorly leveled premium table plays worse than a well-leveled cheap one.

Custom Builds
Because Champion builds to order in its own facility, customization goes further than with any other brand we stock:
- Custom stains beyond the standard finish options
- Playfield logos — a family name, a team, a business mark, applied directly to the playing surface
- Frame material — maple standard, with red oak available at no additional charge on many models
- Scoring — Handicap Scoring standard, with traditional or electronic units available
- Light kits for overhead playfield illumination
- Coin-op configuration with bill acceptor and pingate for commercial installations
Custom work extends lead times. Talk to us early in the process if you're specifying anything non-standard.
Champion for Commercial Spaces
Worth addressing directly, because it's part of why the specification reads the way it does. Champion built its reputation in bars, taverns, and league venues, and the design assumptions come from that world: continuous daily play, inexperienced users, drinks near the surface, no gentle handling. The 3" playfield, the polymer coating, the heavy maple cradle, and the coin-op options all exist because commercial operators demanded them.
For a home buyer, this translates into substantial over-engineering — which is exactly what you want from a table you intend to keep for thirty years. For an actual commercial buyer, Champion is among the few brands we carry that's genuinely specified for the job.
Maintenance
Wax on feel, not schedule. Reapply when glide slows. Weekly players will wax far more often than holiday players.
Brush between games. Keeps wax distributed evenly. Uneven wax is the usual culprit when a table suddenly seems to play differently at one end.
Use Sun-Glo. Champion's own line is formulated for the polymer surface. Silicone spray ships with the table for conditioning.
No chemical cleaners. Dry or barely damp cloth only. The polymer is durable but solvents and abrasives will mar it.
Tune the climate adjusters seasonally. Every Champion includes them. Wood moves with humidity, and two or three checks a year with a straightedge — plus adjustment if pucks start drifting consistently to one side — keeps the playfield true.
Never resurfacing. The thing you don't have to do, and the reason the lifetime warranty exists.
Is Champion the Right Choice?
Yes, if you play often and care about how the table plays, you want a table that will outlast your ownership of the house, you value American manufacturing, you want a specific size or a custom finish, you're furnishing a commercial space, or you're building a game room around a centerpiece rather than adding a game to a room.
Look elsewhere if your budget is under $4,000 — see Playcraft or Hathaway. If you want integrated LED lighting, our light-up collection covers it. If you need a table that converts to dining, see dining/conversion. If it's going outdoors, only our outdoor shuffleboards will survive. And if your room can't take a 9ft table with clearance, start with space-saving shuffleboards instead — the Bank Shot 7ft is Champion's only answer below that, and even it needs about 13 feet.
